Union soldier 3pp. letter with cover, written by Collis S. Hough who mustered into "I" Co. CT 1st Heavy Artillery on 5/23/1861. Dateline, March 13, 1862, HeadQuarters First Conn Artillery Fort Richmond VS. In part, "There has been moving of the Army on the Potomac. They commenced moving Monday morning and as soon as the Rebels heard that our Army was coming to fight them, they left their stronghold at Centerville and Manassas and tore up the railroad. .... I think the war is coming to end soon. ... Our Army begins to work very lively ... the Potomac is full of steamers today ... I think they have come from Fortress Monroe after more troops reinforce Gen. Burnside. I think the rebels have gone there to fight him. ... There was two of steamers from Conn - one was the Elmer City(?) from New Haven, the other John Brooks from Bridgeport. ..."
