War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 4to., written by Pvt. Emanual Carbaugh, Co. K., 3rd Maryland Cavalry, Thibodaux, La., March 25, 1864, reading, in part: "- I am now at Thibodaux - we have been everlasting on marching since we left Baltimore - I was on the sea eight days & was quite unhealthy. We are now right among the rebs and we do not expect to quit marching until we get in Texas. We are now about three thousand miles from home - we did not enlist to fight the rebs. We enlisted to fight the Indians and guerrillas. The rebs might give us a raking yet - I was sitting along the road one day, an old man came along and told my fortune. He said another man lifted your letters and got the money. Let me know if you got the money - beside that, he told me you still have the same feeling for me - I am glad of that - he told me some of the neighbors were trying to work you out of your home - it does not cost us soldiers anything for sugar. We go into the country and get our knapsacks full for nothing - direct your letter to Emanual Carbaugh, 3rd Maryland Cavalry, Co. K. -". VG.
