War-date U. S. Grant Headquarter guard letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Private C. L. Woolston, Co. I, 3rd Pennsylvania Cavalry, "Headquarteres, Army of the Potomac, Nov. 30, 1864, to his father, in part: "- there was [a] sharp picket firing last night. Yesterday the entire 9th Corps moved from left to wright. It numbered - 40,00 men with several batteries of artillery. It takes from 6 to 8 horses to pull one piece. When they got apart us the rebs thought it was their chance to stop them so they commenced shelling them -the way they [shelled] them was awful. A part of our regiment went to City Point and -got some of the shelling. Some of them were wounded. They say our lieutenant - was wounded. I guess it is so for he has not been about the railroad which we go on. [It] is not a half mile from the Rebel Fortifications. They struck one of the cars. I am ordered to report to the sergeant major today - I expect to take Rebel deserters or to escort some officer from headquarters to the Point. It is a bully job. We go on the cars and carry sidearms. I have to use someone else's - C. L. Woolston, Co. I, 3rd Penns. Cav., Washington, DC." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Negligible soiling, else VG.
