Union General's Autograph Letter Signed "John R. Kenly", large bold signature, on 4pp letter, Baltimore, Dec. 2, 1865 to Senator J.A.J Creswell, the sitting Maryland Senator. In part, "Please do me the favor to call upon Mr. Stanton ... The letter from myself with the endorsement of Governor Bradford you will also please present. ... I am troubling you but this is really a case entitled to consideration after more than three years service marked by repeated instances of gallantry. Captain Baer, whilst laboring under a severe attack of diarrhea got drunk and when friends would have saved him, went before a Court, pleaded guilty and was dismissed the service with loss of pay etc. As soon as the sentence was known .. every commanding officer recommended his restoration. ... He is now in very reduced circumstances and the pay, fairly earned and due at time of his dismissal, would be of great importance to his future."Captain James S. Baer he was commissioned into "A" Co. MD 1st Infantry, 6/30/1861. He was wounded and captured 5/23/1862 Front Royal, VA. He was exchanged 9/21/1862 Aiken's Landing, VA.
