Union soldier's 4pp. letter written by George A. Spencer who enlisted on 8/16/1862 as a Private, mustered into "I" Co. RI 7th Infantry, was listed as missing 12/13/1862 Fredericksburg, VA. and was Mustered Out on 6/9/1865. Datelined Nottaway Va. Camp of 7th RI Vol, In the field at Burkesville, Va., April 7, 1865. In part, "We had news read to us today saying Sheridan had captured 6 Maj. Genls, 8,000 prisoners, 70 ambulances and 15 pieces of artillery ... We have got Bob Lee on the run now, and we are going to keep him so ... I never see the army in such good spirits. ... I see all the fight in front of our line. ... I stood behind the works and looked over and dodged when I see the Rebs fire their guns. Our battery made some handsome shots ... The Rebs held one side of the line all day... PS, The Rebel Gen. Early and Ewell and over 4,000 prisoners are up to the station and I cant see the end of the Reb prisoners that are coming yet. Gen. A.P. Hill was killed at Petersburg ..."
