Six page letter written by former Maryland Hospital Stewart, James A. Scott who on 11/27/1861 he mustered into "C" Co. MD 1st PHB Cavalry, was wounded 9/2/1862 Leesburg, VA., was POW 9/14/1862 Harper's Ferry, WV. The letter is written to Capt. A./M. Walker, (former Quartermaster) Gettysburg Pennsylvania, from Harrisburg Virginia, August 17, 1906. Scott reminisces of the War . In part, "Near Strasburg, I saw the spot along the stream where Hitchcock once requested me to set a picket for him. It was late at night and raining and sleeting and he was 'too sick' to spend the night under open sky, but must go to Strasburg. I placed the picket for him and in my absence two prisoners, of those we had picked up at Upperville, escaped whereupon Captain George Washington Franklin Vernon put me under arrest, to be sent back to base in the morning. When Hitchcock heard it, he came to me immediately and begged me to say nothing to Vernon about the picket business and he would make it alright for me. He feared being arrested himself for shoving off his duty on a non-commissioned officer. Lieut. Horner went to Vernon and gave him a bit of his mind about the matter, telling me to keep my arms and march on up the Valley with the column. I did so and never heard anything more about the incident. ... "
