A pair of Union soldier letters, written by Daniel E. Worthley who mustered into "I" Co. MA 26th Infantry, 10/18/61 and re-enlisted on 1/5/1864. He was Mustered Out on 8/26/1865 at Savannah, GA. POW 10/26/1864 Near Newtown, VA., Exchanged 2/9/1865 (place not stated). The first two page letter, datelined Washington DC, August 3, 1864, in part, "We arrived at Washington today .. we are now camped at a village just outside Georgetown. We are expecting an attack from the rebels who are or were near here. I must be brief for we have just come into camp & we may be ordered off in a minute .... I think we are going to have some rough times for a while ..." ... plus, The second 2page letter, on US Christian Commission letterhead, is datelined Mount Pleasant Hospital, Washington DC, Aug 15th, 1864, in part, ".. the Dr. gave me my description list and sent me here. My disease is diarrhea but I think I'll get better here now. ... This place is about 2 miles from the Capitol. I'm in tent No. 17, convalescent camp. ... This place is quite a large hospital there being a great many sick and wounded soldiers here. ..."
