The pencil 2-page Confederate soldier letter signed only "J.L. Cross". Datelined, Newton, Sunday Morning, July 28, 1862 to his sister Mrs. Sid O. Miller, Winchester. In part, "I am very sorry I can't come in to see you this morning, but I think it would be risking too much as we have no force about Winchester now. ... If the fortunes of cruel war should deprive me of meeting all on earth, it is my prayer that we meet beyond the grave where there is no war. ... I am going farther where I know the storm of battle must rage more furiously than heretofore, but I regard it as my duty and know that I am doing right, consequently have no fear. ...."
