The 4-page Confederate Soldier's letter was written by Randolph C. Fairfax who on 8/31/1861 he mustered into "1st" Co. VA Rockbridge 1st Light Artillery. He was listed as absent, leave 2/7/1862 ) (For 34 days) and wounded 7/1/1862 Malvern Hill, VA. Fairfax was Killed on 12/13/1862 at Fredericksburg, VA. (Hit in the head by a shell fragment.) Hailed at the time as "The flower of the south", Fairfax was remembered as an ideal southern soldier whose death was used by Confederate officials as a morale booster after he died in battle at Fredericksburg in 1862. "A Sketch of the Life of Randolph Fairfax" published in 1864 by the Rev. Philip Slaughter, D.D. A Sketch is a glorified recounting of Fairfax's life leading up to his death at Fredericksburg.
