This 4-page Confederate letter is written by J.H. Fort Lane Newbern, Co. J 27th Reg. N.C. Vols. Datelined; Fort Lane, March 2, 1862, written illustrated Hillsborogh Military Academy, matching front panel, clipped stamp not present. In part, "This fort is about four miles below New Bern and about two miles from Spruel's regt. where your brother Jefferson belongs. ... Our Company seems to be well pleased with the move from Fort Macon. ... At least a while there was a Confederate steamer ran the blockade at Fort Macon last Thursday, called the Nashville. She had on board a million dollars in specie. She also had on board some plates for striking bonds and note paper. ... the blockading vessel fired on her some fifteen times before she got to Morehead City. This same vessel burned up one of Ole Abe's vessels the day before she came in with a thousand barrels of flour and pork aboard her. ..."
