Enormous Letter and Artifact grouping of William Hervey Coffin who enlisted on August 9, 1862 and mustered into Co. C, 39th Iowa Infantry as a private on August 27, 1862. He mustered out of the regiment on June 5, 1865 at Washington, D. C. There are a total of 140 letters chronologically held in four 3-ring binders, mostly written to his wife and transcribed. The letters were published in a book, "Love Letters From The Civil War" by John Chapman, William's great grandson.
