Civil War era "War tax" letter, 1p. 4to., written by Iowa Treasury office representative F. S. Graham, "Treasury Office, Adel, Dallas County, Iowa, Sept. 15, 1862, to "Mr. D. S. Wolfinger," Leitersburg, Maryland, reading, in part: "- in reply I will say. The taxes- are all paid except the Federal or War Tax for 1861. That tax comes in after you had paid your other taxes. The law gives those that had paid their taxes the privilege of letting their War tax stand until they paid their next year's tax. When you pay your taxes for 1862. You can then pay the War tax for 1861 and interest. The War tax was $6.32 in the spring, now there is 20$ interest to add. The reason we sent you the delinquent list was that Michael Wolfinger has unpaid taxes in our county. By looking on the list you will see one forty of your land in Samuel Boyd's name for 1858 - is double assessment, twice on the tax book that has been corrected. Yours, etc., F. S. Graham."
