A barely literate Union soldier's battle letter, 4pp. 8vo., written "Union & Liberty. 101st Regiment New York Volunteers" patriotic stationery by a member of that regiment named, Charles, "Camp in the field, July 14, 1862," to his mother, in small part: "I take my pen in han to right to you to let you know that I am well - I don't no but what you think I am kill or wounded, but I aint hurt - thar was good many kill[ed] an wounded round me - [Rufus] Barnard is wounded in the leg. The bat[tle] was on Sunday nite - the 29 of June [battle of Savage Station] [?] was in that [battle] and the fifth regiment [5th New York Duryea Zouaves] was cut up pretty bad. Company E was cut up so they didn't have but eight man that nite, but half come in since - so there is - fifty men in Company E of the Fifth regiment now. I will send you my [?] miniature in this letter so you can see - tell Daniel not to lev to come out here - Charles [?] Negligible stains, else VG.
