Very good war-date Pennsylvania citizen's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by James P. Atherton, Wyoming, Pennsylvania, June 4, 1862, to 'My Dear Aunt Eliza," reading, in part: "- Coary is coming up this week to make a visit. He is doing very well the last winter speculating in government bonds - we hear sometimes of the troubles in St. louis and think of you and your family. How do you get along with it. We saw that Mr. Wm. R. Loop an old acquaintance was shot on acct. of his principles in open day light in St. Louis. It must be pretty hard times when men cant express loyal sentiments without endangering their lives. We are looking for sterling events and for the occupation of Richmond every day. Some of our Luzerne boys were in the last battles there. Our brother, Mr. Henry has a son [Captain William Henry, Jr.] in the 2nd [actually the 1st] New Jersey Regiment in(sic) staff of Genl. [William R.] Montgomery. He says they expect some hard fighting there before entering Richmond. The younger of Mr. Henry's sons who was captain of a company of men from Jersey was killed in fight at Roan Oak Island. [Captain Joseph J. Henry, Co. H, 9th New Jersey Vols.] He was killed by a cannon ball while bravely cheering on his men. It was a hard blow upon Mr. Henry but says he is proud to have - his son die in so good a cause as defending his country & country's flag - your affectionate nephew, Jas. P. Atherton." Overall VG
