Great war-date Autograph Letter Signed by Brigadier General ERASTUS BARNARD TYLER (1822-1891) as colonel commanding a brigade in General Shields' division in western Virginia, 1p. 4to., "Head Quarters, 3d Brigade, 25th Jany. 1862," addressed to the brigade's quartermaster, Lieut. R. P. Johnson, reading, in part: "The bear E. E. Johnson wagon master, 29th Ohio Inftry. is empowered by the Regtl. Quarter master of that Regt. to procure transportation. If you cannot furnish it he proposes to make it his special business to look after it at Wheeling - you can give him such orders & instructions as may appear to you most efitiant(sic) to the speedy procurement of an outfit for the Regiment. Respectfully, etc., E. B. Tyler, Col. Comdg. 3d Brigade." Tyler was elected colonel of the 7th Ohio over James Garfield after he help raise the regiment in 1861. He was commissioned brigadier general in May, 1862 and served as brigade commander in the 5th Corps. He brigade saw heavy service at both the battles of Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville.
