Union Solder's Pass issued to Lt. Col. Wm. Swain who enlisted as a Captain, into "A" Co. IN 34th Infantry, 10/4/1861. He was listed as wounded 5/16/1863 Champion Hill, MS. and died of those wounds on 6/17/1863. The pass is preprinted "Headquarters, Department of the Tennessee In The Field Before Vicksburg", June 14th, 1863. In full, Permission is granted to Lt. Col. Swain a Lt. Col. of 34th Ind Infty to proceed to Memphis Tenn his business being on furlough. He will be permitted to take a Servant if required, but not an Enlisted Man." It is ink signed by Lieut.
