A great war-date Union recruiting duty letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Sergeant Albert P. Lanphere, Co. I, 112th Illinois Vols., Spring Hill, [Illinois], Feb. 24, 1863, to his brother, Musician Henry Lanphere who remains at the front with the regiment, reading, in part: "- I want you to tell the Cap. [James E. Wilkins, POW Riceville, TN, 9/23/63. Escaped Libby Prison, VA, 2/09/64] that I am ready to come back as there is no chance to get a man to go with us. I put up about fifty bills [recruiting broadsides] in and about Geneseo [Illinois] and they were all torn down within three days. I wish I could come up here and fight Rebels as I would much rather shoot them here than in the South. I sent you five dollars and expect you have got it before this time. You must make do till I come back - I shall be back within two weeks as the state is sending all recruiting officers back to their Regs. as fast as they can. I don't care how soon we go back as I am getting somewhat home sick and lonesome - yours respectfully, Albert P. Lanpher." Two punch at left margin with light soiling, else VG.
