A great war-date Illinois home front letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by a certain, "Lizzie", Dixon, Illinois, July 28, 1863, to her "Dear husband," in part: "The past & present week, thus far, has been very bad for Dixon. On the 23rd the Body of Homer Stedman [8th Illinois Cavalry, KIA Gettysburg, PA, 7/01/63] arrived here & the Funeral took place next morning from his Father's house. On the afternoon - many of our towns people went to Sterling to attend the Funeral of Col. [Edward N.] Kirk [34th Illinois Vols., MWIA Stones River, TN, 12/31/62, Died Sterling, IL, 7/?/63]. On the same afternoon, Mrs. William Young received news of her husband's death at Washington. {Pvt. William Young, 8th Illinois Cavalry severely wounded (right leg amputated) battle of Brandy Station, VA, 6/09/63. Died Washington, D. C., 7/20/63]. Charlie Da[?] is wounded, unable to come home - Abram is in the hospital at Paducah & Lew is at Camp Chase, on parole - he says their officers are all detained at Richmond. The Rebels refuse to exchange them. Part of their brigade was after [John Hunt] Morgan when he wrote. There is no standing around waiting to be waited upon in the stores & groceries now. There is one to 3 read to wait upon you anytime. There is a saloon kept in Mr. Kinny's grocery room - one day last week an officer from some place & going someplace else & having with him a negro boy stopped with him at the Nauchusa to dinner. Whilst eating - some man that had tracked him from the cars - had a tool ready - saying that his master had - sent him with a buggy after the boy who believed him & got in the buggy & was driven off to some grove & set out with orders to remain until called for, in place of which, he made his way back to the hotel. The result - the instigator is in jail for want of five hundred dollars & Charlie Smith, livery stable, is under [arrest] as an accomplice. One thousand dollars bonds has given bail. Mathews, druggist, is suspected the man that took the boy away, escaped - good night, Lizzie." Overall VG
