War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by newly promoted Orderly Sergeant Charles J. Baxter, Co. F, 27th New Jersey Vols.,"Camp Sumner on the Rappahannock, [Va.], Feb. 8, 1863," to his "dear parents, Bros & Sisters," in part: "- I perceive by it you have not yet heard of Jno. Henry's death. Uncle Sharp was in New York with his body the day you wrote. He wrote me a letter while in the City until the receipt of which I was also ignorant of the sad affair. I suppose he arrived home on Friday. The particulars of the funeral I have learned from others - we have been under marching orders several days - I am now promoted of the office of Orderly Sergeant, the old orderly being reduced to the ranks - my cares & responsibilities are much increased. The pay of an Orderly is $21 a month - Sylvester Belcher is near me while I am writing - he sometimes tells the cooks some dreadful fibs to cheat them out of an extra ration of beefsteak - Chas. J. Baxter." Minor spotting, else VG
