War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Orderly Sergeant Charles J. Baxter, Co. F, 27th New Jersey Vols., "Camp Burnside near Newport News, [Va.], March 15, 1863," to "dear father," in part: "- no money is used or will pass here but Greenbacks. There is considerable talk in camp relative to reenlisting this regiment at the expiration of the nine months. It is the plan of those who desire to keep it in the service to reenlist it under the old officers. I think there is a number who will again serve their country, but the majority are in favor of returning home - I will not reenlist previous to coming home & not then unless I can procure your consent - there is a great deal of talk concerning the coming draft. I am sorry it is necessary to call so many more men - & am yet glad there is a draft impending just because of the unhappiness & discomfort it will occasion Northern Copperheads. Those who are true patriots will not fear it. I rather think some of the citizens of Vernon (whose patriotism is questionable) will experience more trouble in avoiding the draft than the one last Fall - Charles J. Baxter." Minor spotting, else VG.
