Union soldier's four page, pencil letter written by Milton R. Billings who enlisted on 7/13/1863 as a Private and was drafted into "G" Co. MA 18th Infantry. He was transferred out on 10/21/1864 at Petersburg, VA., transferring into "B" Co. MA 32nd Infantry. He was Mustered Out on 6/29/1865 at Washington, DC. He was listed as wounded 2/8/1865 Hatcher's Run, VA. Datelined, Camp near Beverly ford Va, February 23, 1864, writing to his wife. In part, "... but to tell you the truth, I don't think larn (sp?) gave it to her ... henry cook has had it. ... you know when he was so sick he had the clap then because he wrote to me and told me so. ... I think that he thinks too much of his wife to give it to her ... She's the one that dont love in my opinion ... When he goes on a drunk, Amy wrote to Andrew about Louisa going to keep hose up to Anson Wilson Anderson told me about it. He says they will have gay times when Jim goes on a drunk ..."
