War-date Union soldier's letter written by Pvt. Edward F. Hall, Co. B, 3rd New Hampshire Vols., [WIA Deep Bottom, Va., Aug. 16, 1864 severely wounded left leg, amputated] on colorful Union "The War For The Union" patriotic stationery, 3pp. 8vo., Hilton Head, S. C., Jan. 3, 1862, reading, in part: "- Tuesday Co. B was sent out on picket guard - yesterday thare was a fight up above here 10 or 12 miles [Port Royal Ferry, Coosaw River, S. C.] - two regts in our brigade were in it, the N. Y. 47th & 48th - our forces drove them with the help of our gunboats. There is a good deal of anxiety felt here on account - of war with England. We shall be in a tight place with the English on one side and the rebels on the other - I hope it will not be so -I wish I could come home and see you a little while and run round and see everybody. I suppose it would be hard finding anybody whom I knew among those able to go to the war. Was it Dana Walton you spoke of about being homesick - Edward F. Hall. PS, Have you got acquainted with any of the families of the Exeter men who belong to this Co. Mother knows some of them." Overall VG
