[Albert] Pike House; Phil Sheridan's Arrest. A good war-date letter, 3pp. 4to., written by recently discharged 1st Lieut. Dudley F. Jones, quartermaster 3rd Iowa Cavalry, Little Rock, Ark., Feb. 26, 1865, to his sister-in-law, Mrs. Abner H. Wait, Rexford Flats, N. Y., reading, in part: "-what regiment is George Wait in [4th Iowa Infantry]. I understood a long time ago that Avery Perry was in an Iowa Reg. [20th Iowa Infantry] but have never met him. I fear my adventures would be very tame when there are so many returning to your neighborhood to relate their experiences, besides the while East has been so absorbed in the Army of the Potomac that our Western Armies were almost lost sight of. I have served under Grant & Sherman at Vicksburg and Phil Sheridan was our quartermaster just before the battle of Pea Ridge. He had a quarrel with Gen. [Samuel] Curtis who ordered him under arrest, but was released by Gen. Halleck who was then at St. Louis - he now commands the Army of the Potomac. I have great faith in Sherman think when he works his way north to cut off all of Lee's supplies there will be a big battle & peace - they will not make anything out of crazy Sherman as he was called in St. Louis in '61 when he said it would take 200,000 men to open the Mississippi. This army has done nothing since its first advent here. We hold the line of the Arkansas River, but it is only a line - no one dares venture outside of our picket lines - a good many things was done when Steele was removed. This is quite a pretty place - I am living with Judge [Henry C.] Caldwell, U. S. Dist. Judge, formerly Lt. Col. of our Reg. in the [Albert] Pike House - [owned by] - Albert Pike the man who fought & scalped our men at Pea Ridge with his Indians. He is or was from Massachusetts - the house is very large & roomy. The judge expects his family before long. The front yard is rather pretty - contains about two acres - your affectionate brother, D. E. Jones." The letter's original stamped transmittal cover is included. Overall near fine.
