A great Union sergeant's account of surviving Robert E. Lee's last major offensive of the Civil War, the March 25, 1865 pre-dawn assault on the Union army defense line at Fort Stedman, Virginia. The letter, 1p. 8vo., is written by Sergeant Henry P. Corse, Co. L, 1st Vermont Heavy Artillery, "Camp Patrick Station, Va., March 26, 1865, to his sister, in part: "We have had another hard fight and I came out safe and sound. We charged on the Rebel's works and toothier first line and hold them. It was as nice a little fight as I ever saw. Our loss was small. We had one killed [Corp. Horace G. Barnes] and three wounded [Corp. Lewellen M. Ainsworth] in our company. We expect more fighting everyday - yours in haste, Henry P. Corse."
