Pamphlet, “"Two Letters to a Cotton Planter of Tennessee", 1852, Myron Finch, New York, 26pp. plus Green cover, disbound, VG. The letters written by H.C. Carey, serve as a defense of slavery and a critique of the growing abolitionist movement. In the first letter, he argues that slavery is a natural and beneficial institution, both for the enslaved people and for society as a whole. In the second letter, he attacks the abolitionist movement, accusing its proponents of hypocrisy and fanaticism. It is a significant document in the history of the antebellum South, as it reflects the prevailing ideology of the time. (Donated to Manuscript Society)
