Documentary Photo Aids was an educational supplier of reproduction photographs covering various periods of American history. Each professional photo has a printed caption describing the image. Additionally, when bought in topic groups, DPA would include a Teacher’s Guide providing the history of that period. These are 14” x 11”, c1960-1970. Unlikely they could be used in public schools today. This is a group of FIVE Photos of period slavery images. The first is a famous image “Emancipated Slaves Brought from Louisiana by Colonel George H. Banks December 1863” clearly shows the race mixing with the lighter skin children. Banks accompanied eight emancipated slaves from New Orleans to New York and Philadelphia expressly to visit photographic studios. A publicity campaign promoted by Major General Nathaniel Banks of the Department of the Gulf, and by the Freedman’s Relief Association of New York, its sole purpose was to raise money to educate former slaves in Louisiana. ... plus, “Price Biroh & Co. Dealers in Slaves” was a slave auctioneer. The building shone was their Slave Pen, Alexandria, Virginia,1863. This view of a slave pen in Alexandria is guarded, ironically, by Union officers. The pen had been converted by the Union Army into a prison for captured Confederate soldiers. ... plus, An abandoned antebellum plantation, Shamrock also known as the William Porterfield House, Vicksburg, Mississippi. ... plus, Photo of Live Oak Avenue, which contains the slaves' cabins or houses at Drayton's plantation in Hilton Head, SC. showing soldiers and men, women, and children slaves standing beside houses along the lane. ..., plus, Fascination photo of the “good life” showing eight slaves, a mule/cart in front of the slave cabin.
