A great Nathan B. Forrest command letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. G. B. Huddleston, Co. C, 13th Tennessee Cavalry, "Camp near Columbia, Murray Co., Tenn., Dec'r. 9th 1862," to his brother, J. N. Huddleston, reading, in full: "We are all well at the time and have been since we saw you. We are now encamped in 1 mile of Columbia, we have been here a little over a week. It is said we will leave here in the morning but not going but a mile or two. We heard yesterday that Price had whipped them out in Mississippi. We also learned that our pickets are advancing on Nashville. It is rumored that we will move towards Fort Donelson when we leave here, but we do not believe it. Morgan, they say, is ordered to Kentucky it is said to tear up the Rail Road track. I have nothing of much importance to write. Bob, is with us yet. He has traded off his horse and got cheated. My old horse stands it fine. He was graveled as we came down here from Murfreesboro & the gravel worked out up at the edge of the hoof. He looked worsted for a few days but he has recruited up again & looks to be all right now. Dave has had the black well shod. She looks well as she did. The boys were all in hopes that we would get to go back up in the mountain country. It is said that Col. Dibrell had choice either to go up home or sty with the Brigade. Some of the boys are down on him. We received a letter from home yesterday. We understand that Ned is not willing to come and cook for us. If he is not willing we don't want him. We would like very well to have a good nigger cook. We do not care so much about his cooking as we do tending to other business for us. We can cook good enough ourselves, but if Hamp or some else will hire a good negro boy we will pay a good price for him. Joel C. Galbert is in our camp. He exchange places with Albert Ballard. He is in our mess & says tell his folks he would like to have a pair of good jeans sent if they can be sent to him. I have thinking for a few days yet to come home on some business, but I do not know how it will be. We received our sheets & everything you sent by Enoch Green, but we learn from a letter from Uncle Green's folks that there was a package of clothes sent us by Lt. Huse outside of the lines that never got. G. B. H." Minor toning, else VG.
