A southern Civilian letter written to his soldier son, 1pp. , dateline Alexander April 4, 1862, with original cover addressed “Mr. C P M. L Abernathy, Section P, Calowell County NC. In part, “A merciful God has kept you & dear John through dangers ... and I devoutly pray that he will prolong us ... Life in the most formable times is uncertain. But now the perils of every day when added to natural cause of dissolution should elevate your thoughts to Heaven where sorrows never exists ... Though you may escape, my son, the perils that are every where, we may never meet again. Age when left alone will carry us to the inevitable doom and death will soon be appearing at my door, nor will it listen to excuse or delay. Three score years and ten are far beyond the allotment of the most that are born ...I was born as you know in the year 1794 and darkness is beginning to come over one of my eyes is blind, the other fast failing ... the short remaining of my days will be shut out but the cheerful light of heaven...”
