Henry Jackson Hunt (1819 – 1889) was Chief of Artillery in the Army of the Potomac during the American Civil War. Considered by his contemporaries the greatest artillery tactician and strategist of the war, he was a master of the science of gunnery and rewrote the manual on the organization and use of artillery in early modern armies. Hunt was a veteran member of the Aztec Club of 1847. Hunt's most famous service in the war was at the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863. At the time of this letter, Hunt was in command of the Department of the South, headquarters Newport Barracks, Ky., Jan. 6, 1881, to Sep. 14, 1883. Autograph Letter Signed “Henry J. Hunt” on Headquarters Department of the South letterhead, writing to Mr. R.H. Gardner, 4pp. Datelined: Newport Barracks Ky., June 6, 1882. Hunt reviews his involvement in the Mexican American War and continues listing eight Generals who served in both Mex-Am and Civil War to include St. Geo Cooke, Gen. Geo Stoneman, Gen. R.H. Rucker .....”
