Lorenzo Thomas (1804-1875)From 1853 to 1861, he served as chief of staff to the commanding general of the U.S. Army, Winfield Scott. Then was an American officer in the United States Army who was Adjutant General of the Army at the beginning of the American Civil War. After the war, he was appointed temporary Secretary of War by U.S. President Andrew Johnson, precipitating Johnson's impeachment. Signed Document “L. Thomas” on a General Order No. 4, issued Head-Qusrters of the Army, New York, March 30 1857. Thomas reports three incidents with the Indians:"Lieutenant Robert C Wood, Jr. and his scouting detachment" ... overtook the party ... Concho Texas, February 13, killed three captured two ...” ... Sergeant Walter McDonald .. successfully attacked a party of hostile Indians-killing four and capturing all their animals ..” ... "Lieutenant Edmund Freeman, 5th Infantry, reconnoitring with a small party in the Big Cypress Swamp, near Bowleg's town, Florida, was attacked by the Seminoles, March 5, himself and three of his men severely wounded and one man killed.” He then lists the loss of troops, killed, died of wounds and wounded.
