Union soldier’s 4pp letter on stunning patriotic letter sheet, “CAPITOL U.S.” by Henry M. Herring who on 10/3/1861, he mustered into "I" Co. New York 80th Infantry (Co. I, 20th New York State Militia) and was Mustered Out on 1/29/1866 at Portsmouth, VA. Datelined Co. I 20 Regt. N.Y. Militia , Camp Wadsworth, Dec. 13th, 1861, in part “We have been drilling all afternoon .. there are 8 regiments engaged in the drill. .... There are a good many in our regiment sick, some that will never recover ... I am sorry to say two more died last night. ... A soldier’s life is pretty hard ... We have had no battles yet ... the pickets have been attacked several times. .. I am not afraid to face the enemy for the sake of the Union and mankind ...”
