A great Pennsylvania war-date home-front letter, 2pp. legal folio, written by Charles D. Manely, [n. p., but Media, Delaware County, Pa.], Se[t. 1, 1862, to Lieut. Ralph Buckley (1830-1895), Co. B, 124th Pennsylvania Vols., reading, in part: "- a rather friendly altercation was going on between myself and Vanler Eachus in the presence of John Hall - Eachus and Broomwall enjoining the necessity of one party [in] these war times and enjoining me to join their party when Dalton Otley swept into the ring. Hall made an insinuation to some one of Secession and when required to tell whom he meant, [he] appealed to Otley and said he had been told so. This raised the [?] fire of Newtown and he pronounced the other a liar, coward and scoundrel and told Hall if he did not name the author he Otley would hold him accountable - your friends at home are defending the Constitution, and the laws, against the enemies of social [?] who would charge disloyalty to men, truer to the Union than themselves. The news from the battlefield - has produced an intense feeling here and especially so as we have no assurance the 124th will not, if it has not already immediately participated. The necessity that would call it intone action and we trust and hope not, in so unprepared condition must be imminent indeed and while we hope you maybe more skillful in field drill and marching than time has allowed you before going into battle. We have no misgivings that you will not do your whole duty if the unfortunate emergency - we can only entrust you to the hands of divine power, and appeal to his goodness for your safety - the 'Union party' is to meet on Thursday next to make a ticket to be voted by the self styled loyalists - Gamble declares being a candidate for the legislature - Charles Ingersoll of Phila. who was arrested a week ago for making a democratic speech in the State House yard came before Judge Cadwallader today on a Writ of Habeus Corpus and was discharged without a hearing the Secty. of War, having released him, at his (the Sectry's) own suggestion. The Evening's Bulletin contains that astounding news that the 'Tribune Office' has been closed by the Marshall of New York for having published that McClellan was a coward, and Banks' division was all cut to pieces. This is putting a stop to treason - Chas. D. Manely." Overall VG.
