Union soldier’s 4pp letter written on illustrated letter sheet “THE GREAT NAVAL BATTLE BETWEEN.. MONITOR .. MERRIMAC”, written by Alvin M. Bracket who on 10/19/1861, he mustered into "F" Co. Maine 1st Cavalry. He was listed as: wounded 3/1/1864 Richmond, VA (Wounded on Dalghran Raid) and taken POW 3/1/1864 Richmond, VA. Bracket died wounds POW on 3/7/1864 at Richmond, VA. Datelined: Opposite Fredericksburg May 20th, to his brother, in part “We have been on a review this fornoon, 9 batteries and our Cavalry and 7 Reg of Infantry. ... We are in Ord’s Division .. We are under marching orders ... we may go where I cannot write ... you need not be worried if you don’t hear from me again until we get to Richmond ... There was aflag of truce the other day .... A great battle in the West for 3 or 4 days but it hasn’t got in the papers ...”
