Union soldier’s 3pp. letter identified only as “Austin”, datelined Camp Derby, Newport News, Va. Dec. 23, 1863, to his parents and brother. In part, “I write you this morning under peculiar circumstances, I have not heard from any of you for three weeks something which has not happened before ... What can be the cause of so long a silence ... I am mustered in to the service for three years more. ... There is a hundred and forty in the regiment. ... The rebs opened on our picket boat just up the James with a field battery, but a few shots from the gun boat cleared them out. Carrying provisions to our prisoners at Richmond has been stopped by the Rebel Authorities on account of the tone of the Northern newspapers. ... Gen. Butler is going to try his skill at effecting an exchange of prisoners ...
