Union soldier’s 3pp. letter written by Melvin Vanamber who on 9/11/1862 mustered into "D" Co. New York 10th Heavy Artillery. He was mustered out 6/23/1865 at Petersburg. The letter is datelined Watertown (NY), August 17, 1864, with original cover. In part, “I am glad to hear that you are satisfied with your fare. I suppose the army is provided for as well as can be expected. I was much pleased to hear that you shot a rebel. I hope you will shoot some more before you come back. I was sorry to here that you lost the fort after having fought so hard to capture it. ... I went to hear an Italian lecture last night - he was a drummer boy in Garibaldi’s army (likely Antonio Arrighi).
