Union Soldier’s 4pp. letter written by Henry McEuen Jones who at the age of 15, Henry ran away from home and enlisted in the on 10/1/1862,10th Missouri Cavalry in the Civil War but was taken prisoner, and held in the Cahaba Confederate prison in Alabama until the close of the war.Datelined:Camp near Vicksburg, Mississippi May 5th [‘64] to his father, in part “ Don’t fret for money. I will send it to you when I get it myself. I had no chance to send my bounty home and should I keep it here and have it stole from me? ... We have tried ourselves a little on the rebs on the last expedition through Mississippi. The army has good health. ... sent for me to join you and prove that I run off and joined. I do not want to get out of the service but a soldier must have money. ...” Then he continues with words to his brother, John H. Jones in part “There are $20 dollars at uncle’s too for Margaret from Edmund. He is well and says for the children to be good and children write soon. And tell W. M. to write. I have received but one letter since I have been in the regiment. I wish you would write to me....”
