A great Jubal Early 1964 raid on Washington, D. C. Ohio soldier's letter, 3 1/2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Webb Goff, 169th Ohio National Guard Infantry, "In the Captain's Quarters, [Fort Ethan Allen, Maryland, July 10, 1864, reading, in small part: "-this morning - came in off of picket - you say we are in Dixie shire enough. No more (Oh I wish I was in Dixie), but oh I wish I was out of Dixie for it [is] so awful hot done here - our Col. [Nathaniel Haynes] command [of Fort Ethan Allen] has been taken from him. He still has command of the Reg, but not of the fort. Their is a raid by the Rebs through part of Maryland & Pennsylvania which they have did considerable damage. We heard heavy firing yesterday and report says that they had a pretty sever fight in Hagerstown, Maryland. [Battle of Monocacy] in which our troops had to fall back and surrender the place to the rebus. The Rebs are within about 12 miles of this place so you see it may be altogether possible that the 169th O. N. G. I. may have some fun with the Rebs for all. Well, let them come. We are a brave set of boys - we don't know what scare is for we never seen a reb or anything to get scared at. We are ordered out every morning at 3 o'clock with our arms in the fort. We go out there and lay around till morning then go to camp again, but I think this raid wont last long for Sherman arrived yesterday - to quell this thing - Webb Goff." Minor toning, else VG.
