Booklet, “THE SANITARY COMMISSION OF THE UNITED STATES ARMY” A Succinct Narrative of its Works and Purposes. NY, Published for the benefit of the United States Sanitary Commission, 1864. First edition. Octavo. vi, 318 pp., circle institution stamp “United States Sanitation Commission, English Branch London”, lacks covers else near fine. The Sanitary Commission coordinated the efforts of volunteers, mostly women, who raised money, ran hospital ships, kitchens and rest homes, and tended the wounded during the Civil War. It was created in 1861 and disbanded in 1866, its last task being helping soldiers to receive their back pay and pensions. The details of supplies, personnel, locations, battles, kinds of wounds, the "War against Scurvy," aid to different branches of the service, are all laid out.
