A Union soldier’s 3pp. letter, on scarce patriotic letterhead “United Forever” with original cover, to his parents, written by Elias L. Buterbaugh who enlisted as a Priv(date unknown) and mustered into US Regular Army Signal Corps. Datelined, March 12, (1865) Grants Gen. Hospital, Willets Point, NY Harbor, in part “The 8th of next month will be six months that I have been here in this hospital. I think if I don’t get better by then I will try to get discharged. ... There is still some coming here every week. This place will soon be full, then I think we’ll get transferred to our own state. ... I think it will not be long till the war will be over ... Sherman is still driving the rebels every time he meets them ... there is great many going to the army, I am glad to hear such news for that will do as much toward putting this rebellion down as one victory .. let the rebels see that we have plenty of men ...”
