James Adelbert Mulligan, was on 6/18/1861, commissioned into Field & Staff Illinois 23rd Infantry. He was wounded 7/23/1864 Winchester, VA. and died of wounds on 7/26/1864 at Winchester, VA. CDV engraved image with ID on the front mount, “Col. J.A. Mulligan” and backmarked, Carbutts, Lake Street, Chicago. Slightly light. At Winchester, with Confederates closing from all around, Mulligan ordered his troops to withdraw. As he stood up in his saddle to spur his men on, Southern sharpshooters concealed in a nearby stream bed managed to hit the Union commander. Aware of the danger his men were in, he famously ordered: "Lay me down and save the flag." Mulligan's men reluctantly complied. Confederate soldiers captured Mulligan, and carried the mortally wounded colonel into a nearby home, where he died two days later.
