Three page neatly penned letter (in German) in the hand of and signed by Gunzburg with Hebrew date of "5613" [1853] "the bearer of this is my friend Rev. Dr. B. Illowy and I wish to introduce him to you. He has a deep theological knowledge and a profound mind and a most noble character. ...He deserves the best recommendation and I offer my assistance to everyone who...wishes to support [his good work]. He has given here [in Baltimore] splendid proof of his ability as a preacher and lecturer. He intends to deliver a few speeches in Phila. and knowing your influence there I would appreciate your taking good care of him. You may be assured that my using your influence will never be for an unworthy nor an ungrateful one. Everything you do for him I will consider as if you had done it for me and I will be forever grateful." He expresses disappointment that he has yet to see the article that he sent for the Occident to make it into print and hopes Leeser will not delay it any longer. Normal light aging. Exc. +. One small rust mark on the blank left margin left by a paper clip. Back sheet acts as cover with address. Rev. Illowy (1814-1871) was a most distinguished rabbi and scholar and staunch champion of Orthodox Judaism and long engaged in a polemical warfare on that question with Isaac Wise and other prominent leaders of the reform movement.
