Herbert J. Kendall enlisted on 10/10/1861 at New York City, NY as a 1st Sergeant, and on 10/18/1861 he mustered into "D" Co. NY 51st Infantry .Kendall was Killed on 3/14/1862 at New Berne, NC.The medal 1-1/2" x 2-1/2" dangler is engraved on the rim, "Herbert J. Kendall, Prvt. A. 3d. BTN. R.F.N.A bronze medallion and suspension bar, honoring those men who answered President Lincoln's call for 3 month volunteers in 1861. The medal was approved by the state of Massachusetts in 1902, with over 3,000 being awarded.
