PAINE, Robert Treat (1731-1814) was a Massachusetts lawyer and politician, best known as a signer of the Declaration of Independence as a representative of Massachusetts. He served as the state's first attorney general, and served as an associate justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, the state's highest court. Third-person Autograpg Document Signed within the text, "Robert Treat Paine," one page, 6.5 x 2, September 17, 1765. In full: "For same received I promise to pay to Robert Treat Paine or Order eighteen shillings & interest till paid." Signed at the conclusion by Daniel Hunt. Nicely matted and framed with an engraved portrait to an overall size of 10.25 x 12. In fine condition, with brushing to ink affecting a portion of the date.
