Henry Ravenscroft Bryan (1836-1919) was educated at the University of North Carolina before the war. He was a strong supporter of the Confederacy and during the war he moved from New Bern during Federal occupation. After the war he returned to practice law. In 1868 he defended the citizens of Craven and Lenoir County citizens who were accused of participating in Ku Klux Klan offenses. Later he became mayor of New Bern and was attorney for the Atlantic and North Carolina Railroad. Bryan writes "K. H. Lewis" of Rocky Mt., N. C., 1p. 8vo., New Bern, N. C., May 5, 1860 requesting help to find an overseer, in part: "I am anxious to secure the services of a number one overseer…I need one of enlarged experiences and very sturdy habits and very good work management of negroes. If you can assist me in getting one of the above description I will be very much obliged to you. I am willing to pay a fair price. Please do what you can for me…address me here if you think they are suitable persons. Love to Bettie…Henry R. Bryan." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Both near fine.
