BAINBRIDGE, William (1774-1833) was a Commodore in the United States Navy. During his long career in the young American Navy he served under six presidents beginning with John Adams and is notable for his many victories at sea. He commanded several famous naval ships, including USS Constitution, and saw service in the Barbary Wars and the War of 1812. Bainbridge was also in command of USS Philadelphia when she grounded off the shores of Tripoli in North Africa, resulting in his capture and imprisonment for many months. In the latter part of his career he became the U.S. Naval Commissioner. Authograph Letter Signed “W(illia)m Bainbridge” 4pp., St. Petersburg, September 3, 1811 to Messrs. Willing and Francis, VG. Bainbridge advises “Since the date of my last from Ship Lion, I have sold your 9 cases of Indigo at 400 .... The large quantity of Indigo which has arrived ... has come to market have reduced the price of Indigo ... but rest assured gentleman thatI shall do everything in my power for the interest of the property you have committed to my Charge.” Willings and Francis was a Philadelphia merchant firm established in the eighteenth century by two prominent Philadelphia families. The Bingham, owned by Willing & Francis, is likely the first recorded arrival of an American opium ship in China in 1805.
