A great Confederate officer's letter, 1p. 8vo., written by Captain James R. McCallum, Co. D, 63rd Tenn. Vols.,"Gen. Brown's Head Quarters near Chattanooga, 30th Sept. 1863," addressed to Surgeon Samuel H. Stout, 3rd Tennessee Vols., reading, in full: "Mark Simmons & Jno. Kennedy [Pvt. John B. Kennedy, Co. A, WIA Chickamauga] of the 3rd Tenn. Regt. were sent off from Gregg Hospital, the former on Sunday with his thigh broke and the later on Monday morning with a severe flesh wound in his hip & thigh. Dr. Richardson told me -they were both very bad cases. I am anxious to know where they are - that I may advise their friends & probably go to see them. If there is a telegraph office at Chickamauga Station or Ringgold answer by telegram. I will pay the charges if you cannot. By telegram write to me and direct to Chickamauga Station care of Major Roy who moves his train in a mile of the station this morning. Your friend, James McCallum." Stout eventually rose from surgeon of the 3rd Tennessee to medical director of the Army of Tennessee. Later he served as medical director and supervisor at Andersonville's POW Hospital. Integral address panel with a ten-cent Jefferson Davis stamp. Near fine.
