Daniel Harvey Hill (July 12, 1821 – September 24, 1889), commonly known as D. H. Hill, was a Confederate general who commanded infantry in the eastern and western theaters of the American Civil War. At the outbreak of the American Civil War, D. H. Hill became a colonel of the 1st North Carolina Infantry Regiment, the "Bethel Regiment", at the head of which he won the Battle of Big Bethel, near Fort Monroe, Virginia, on June 10, 1861.Manuscript Signed Order “D.H. Hill, Col. Comd” In full, “Head Qtrs, Yorktown Va., June 17, 1861, The sergeant and private of the Alabama Regt. are ordered to Richmond to bring down a Yankee prisoner” The order is docketed by “Geo(rge) Deas”AAG, HdQtrs Richmond June 18, 1861, in full. “General Lee approves on of the prisoners. Now he is being sent to Yorktown with the bearer to effect an exchange.”
