1/4-plate daguerreotype by the studio of Seth Louis Shaw and George H. Johnson of San Francisco, California, as marked on embossed felt on interior of case. Rare. These two were only in business for two months together in 1852. Split hinge, else very good condition. Seth Louis Shaw (1816-1872) Born near Windsor, VT in 1816. Shaw was raised on a farm and at 14 was apprenticed to a cabinetmaker. Early in life he became interested in art and became adept at portrait painting and photography. Arriving in San Francisco with the Gold Rush in 1849, he mined briefly and then opened a daguerreotype gallery in San Francisco. In 1854 he moved north to Ferndale where he established a farm, acted as postmaster, justice of the peace, and coroner. Considered the founder of Ferndale, he died there in 1872.
