A good United States military document, 2pp. 4to., written by Artillery Corps Major Alexander C. W. Fanning, breveted for gallantry during the War of 1812 and the Second Seminole War, Charleston, S. C., March 3, 1828, addressed to Lt. Walter Phillips as commander of Augusta Arsenal, Georgia, reading, in part: "…I wish you to give direction to Mr. Marshall to place the gun shed at twenty feet from the privy, in the south west corner of the mall…its former position was so near the officers quarters that the privy…was extremely offensive…you will observe that the armorers work shop must…be built in the place originally intended for it…hence the interior of the work will appear much more uniform…by placing the gun shed opposite to it…should Mr. Marshall still insist on putting up the gunned shed…exercise your own judgement and if you think proper place it where it was before…bear in mind that I take…all the responsibility of placing it nearer the soldier's quarter. It is impossible for me to say when I may return to Augusta. Lt. S[?] time will not commence for six or eight days…I shall make every exertion to be at my post by the end of this month…A. C. W. Fanning…". Minor loss at left margin fold, toning, else VG.
