CDV of Political Cartoon “The Great Surrender” lampooning the key players in the Trent Affair. In 1861 Rear Admiral Charles Wilkes arrested Mason and Slidell, two Confederate commissioners, on a British steamer, the "Trent," and they were held in Boston for several months. As a result, Wilkes became a national hero, but England was outraged. Secretary of State Seward sent Britain a note disavowing Wilkes?s act. The two prisoners were released in Jan., 1862, and war with Great Britain was averted. From left to right: Lord Russell, Mason, Slidell, Seward, and Jefferson Davis.
